What are Helical Piers?
Helical piers, also known as helical piles or screw piles, are a type of deep foundation system used to support structures and transfer loads to deeper, more stable soil or rock layers. These piers consist of a central shaft with helical-shaped plates or flights welded to the shaft. The helical plates are strategically designed to provide increased bearing capacity and resistance to movement.
During installation, helical piers are mechanically screwed into the ground using hydraulic machinery, creating minimal disturbance to the surrounding soil. As the piers are advanced into the soil, they displace soil laterally, effectively compacting the surrounding soil and creating a stable foundation for the structure above.
Helical piers are commonly used in a variety of applications, including residential and commercial construction, infrastructure projects, and foundation repair and stabilization. They offer numerous advantages over traditional foundation methods, including rapid installation, minimal excavation and disturbance, and immediate load-bearing capacity.
Why Use Helical Piers?
1. Versatility: Helical piers can be used in a wide range of soil conditions, including clay, sand, and rocky terrain, making them suitable for various construction projects.
2. Rapid Installation: The installation process for helical piers is quick and efficient, reducing overall project timelines and costs.
3. Minimal Disturbance: Helical piers require minimal excavation and disturbance to the surrounding soil, minimizing disruption to the site and nearby structures.
4. Immediate Load-Bearing Capacity: Helical piers can immediately bear loads upon installation, allowing for immediate construction or repair work to proceed without delays.
5. High Bearing Capacity: The helical plates on helical piers provide increased bearing capacity compared to other foundation systems, ensuring stability and durability for the structure above.
6. Adjustable Design: Helical piers can be easily adjusted or modified to accommodate changes in design or site conditions, offering flexibility during construction or repair projects.
